Strengthening the common good and the local economy, promoting environmental and climate protection, and the transfer of knowledge at our locations worldwide—that is a matter close to our hearts. Green Exhibition Center

Our Pioneering Role in Climate and Environmental Protection

220,000 m² of green space, around 2,500 trees and 35,000 m² of green roofs—our exhibition center is literally “green”.

Measures for the sustainable operation of Messe München

• The photovoltaic system on the roofs of our exhibition halls supports the power supply on the exhibition grounds—it is one of the largest photovoltaic roof systems in the world and is currently the only one that is installed on an exhibition facility. By using solar energy, we can save the emission of around 1,600 tons of carbon dioxide every year, which would be emitted in power generation from fossil fuels.
• A cogeneration plant powered by natural gas supplies the ICM – Internationales Congress Center München, the West Entrance and the Trade Fair Administration Building with thermal energy and provides the exhibition center with the power generated. Since natural gas is one of the most environmentally friendly primary energies, it goes without saying that we utilize it intensively at our premises.
• Heating for our new halls C5 and C6 as well as the new Messe München Conference Center Nord is supplied exclusively by district heating, which is sourced from geothermal energy.
• We save water and relieve strain on the sewer system thanks to an ingenious rainwater infiltration system. Our trade-fair lakes are fed with rainwater from the roof areas, which we collect in special tanks.

Commitment in the Interests of Shareholders and Citizens

Strengthening the business location, enhancing the common good—these are the shareholders’ core missions assigned to Messe München. Our shareholders are the Free State of Bavaria, the City of Munich, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Chamber of Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria—this means our company literally belongs to the citizens of Munich and the Free State of Bavaria.

We take the trust placed in us by the citizens and the Free State very seriously, and make sure to manage our company, Messe München, in exemplary fashion.This claim is evident in the light of our various corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities:

When tens of thousands of refugees arrived in Munich in September 2015, we provided the people with sleeping space in our exhibition halls at short notice. A total of 17,000 refugees could be accommodated within two weeks.

However, we also take responsibility for social initiatives. For example, we sponsor the cross-industry network “Connect Women” for women in management positions.

Messe München generates revenue, taxes and jobs, in Munich but also across Germany. That’s the result of a study carried out by the ifo Institute on the economic effects of Messe München’s activities. Our trade fair guests from all over the world guarantee high purchasing power and tax revenues.

How the local economy benefits from Messe München

• In an average trade fair year, Messe München induces revenue of €3.29 billion in Germany, €2.6 billion of that in Bavaria.
• Messe München creates around 27,300 jobs, of which about 22,600 are in Bavaria.
• This ensures tax revenues of €646 million in Germany, €250 million of this in Bavaria.
